Community engagement and development

ABB employees in china always provide volunteer service to communities. They contribute their own expertise and provide information on electrical safety to the communities where elderly people live alone and to migrant students. They visit the nursing homes, bring local orphans to Museum Tours, and provide services to Special Olympics athletes. They participate in a lot of environmental protection projects, such as tree planting, and removing invasive species from the wetland.

Shanghai Senior Citizen House Program

ABB companies in Shanghai started a project called “cares about the elders, care about the future”. The project aims at helping non-profit senior citizen houses in Shanghai suburbs to improve facilities of the aged people while calling for public awareness of the challenges brought by the aging population in Shanghai. Till 2012, ABB donated more than RMB 2,000,000, supporting a total of 31 homes for the elderly to improve facilities. At the same time ABB Shanghai volunteers also regularly visited the elders.

Employee volunteer program

ABB formally calls for volunteers’ attention to local community construction in 2010 in areas of education, environmental protection, elder caring etc.. Projects include “Electrical safety” program, visiting the senior citizen houses, city tour with orphanage, Xumiao Library, tree-planting and so on. Till 2013, a total of 3,047 employees participated in voluntary activities and the volunteer hours exceed 12,506 hours.

Electricity Safety project

ABB China calls for all companies to start the “Electricity Safety” volunteer project which aims to raise awareness about how to safely and efficiently use electricity of elderly and migrant students in 2011. Volunteers visit elder people who live alone in local communities and help them identify and avoid safety risks through electricity checks. Besides, volunteers give lessons to school students especially those in migrant communities to provide them with safety tips. Till 2013 , a total of 411 ABB volunteers have visited 170 homes and nine schools, carried out 15 home safety checks and lessons on electricity, and distributed 685 electrical safety manuals to help raise public awareness of electrical safety.
