4 ways how your substation can considerably reduce costs for your plant

Taking control of the electrical system that powers your production facility holds many saving possibilities. Have you considered all the aspects?

Remote control of industrial power supply and distribution systems has been hampered by challenging architectural design and a lack of communication standards resulting in high project execution, commissioning and lifecycle costs. Nowadays, the so called Aspect Object Technology enables a system architecture that delivers seamless engineering and integrated operation environment.  Switching to ethernet-based communication technologies in the substation automation applications  further simplifies the system, bringing interoperability between devices and making the installations leaner.

For your next electrical control project, plan to reduce manhours, as well as infrastructure costs by using 800xA. This is how:

  1. Significant savings can be achieved through reduced hardwired cabling on switchgear by connecting to intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) - this means not only less cabling costs, but also less efforts to install, test and maintain the IEDs.
  2. It is easier to engineer, commission and maintain standardized automation systems with simpler installations. Ready-made object libraries for electrical equipment are available.
  3. The efforts to replicate late changes to the entire system can be minimized when using the object-oriented approach, saving engineering hours and reducing other financial impacts on the whole project schedule.
  4. Automation costs can be further reduced by switching from two systems to one - i.e. combining Electrical Control with the Process Control System. Thus, any inconvenient hardwired or heavily engineered interfaces between the two systems can be eliminated.

ABB's System 800xA is an integrated architecture based on the Aspect Object Technology, including a built-in electrical control system.

System 800xA Electrical Control fully supports the IEC 61850 standard of substation automation for interoperability between devices, an open and flexible architecture, and a future-proof solution based on state-of-the-art communication technology. System 800xA Electrical Control handles IEDs with both vertical communication based on MMS (Manufacturing Message Specification), and horizontal communication based on GOOSE (Generic Object Oriented Substation Event).

System 800xA also supports Fieldbus technologies such as PROFINET and PROFIBUS for process electrification devices like low voltage switchgear, variable speed drives and motor controllers. 800xA has extensive integration with PROFIBUS for efficient engineering and maintenance. With PROFINET, which has a wider bandwidth than PROFIBUS, even more advanced integration of process electrification is available. In addition, 800xA has extensive integration with HART, Modbus and Foundation Fieldbus for efficient process control and asset optimization.
