The future of project execution is now

ABB adds new technologies that can help lower project costs and risk for capital intensive projects

Something needs to change

Studies have shown capital projects to be over budget and plagued with delays. This adds cost overruns and missed opportunities, resulting in automation being put on the critical path.

Traditional “controller centric” automation architecture is inflexible. Hardwired and fieldbus I/O subsystem designs are dependent on process controllers and their control strategies and therefore can’t be completed early in the project, forcing early ‘design freezes’. Field wiring needs to start much earlier and since the I/O subsystem is not defined, marshalling cabinets are used. Costly late changes are inevitable due to assumptions made from the ‘early’ design information needed to complete field wiring designs and control strategies.

Automation projects have been done the same way for decades. New approaches are required, and technology improvements are expected to drive significant project and lifecycle savings.

Removing project dependencies

We take ABB's expert knowledge in delivering capital intensive projects for the Oil & Gas industry and add Flexible I/O and xStream Engineering solutions based on our System 800xA automation platform - to decouple hardware from application engineering. Ethernet I/O network for fieldbus technologies, hardwired I/O, and wireless enable soft marshalling and late binding, thus removing project dependencies. Business results include projects delivered on time and on budget with the automation off the critical path.
Allow project tasks to be done in parallel

Multiple work-stream environment created by decoupling hardware from application engineering means that hardware delivery is no longer dependent on system test, and loop checking is not dependent on I/O modules being integrated with the complete system.

Minimize the impact of late changes

Single channel IO system supporting late binding and soft marshalling communicating via an Ethernet I/O network minimize the amount of re-work needed for late changes in the project.

Reduce testing effort and required footprint

Pre-tested, standardized cabinets that can be wired directly to field devices eliminate the need for physical marshalling cabinets, reducing drawings, equipment and labor. No hardware FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) is required for standard enclosures.

Take the drama out of your next project

For many years, ABB’s Oil & Gas units have been delivering large capital projects using integrated systems with a cloud enabled engineering strategy which included hardware emulation, process simulation and virtualization of the infrastructure hardware.  They leveraged the capabilities of our existing fieldbus technologies together with their Main Automation Contractor (MAC) project delivery strategy to significantly reduce project schedules.

With the addition of the single channel I/O modules and Ethernet network to the System 800xA I/O portfolio, the final component (hardwired I/O) can be addressed and even more efficient projects schedules will be possible.

Parallel project execution - enabling technologies:

  • Integrated systems reduce engineering complexity and lifecycle cost
  • Cloud enabled engineering capabilities providing distributed, multi-user, engineering with efficient, time-saving tools
  • Hardware emulation creates robust test environment when physical hardware is already at site
  • Process Simulation environment for application testing help identify issues prior to startup
  • Virtualization to decouple system infrastructure from engineering activities
  • Flexible I/O Solutions to help decouple project activities and reduce the impact of late changes

With the addition of the single channel I/O modules and Ethernet network to the System 800xA I/O portfolio, the final component (hardwired I/O) can be addressed and even more efficient projects schedules will be possible.
