Wilkman Arctic Adviser

Göran Wilkman was born in 1949 and graduated from Helsinki University of Technology as a Naval Architect (M.Sc.) in 1975. He started his work career at the Wärtsilä Icebreaking Model Basin (WIMB). Since then he has held several positions related to R&D of icebreakers and icebreaking ships. In 1987 he joined the Wärtsilä Arctic Research Centre (WARC) and was responsible for all testing activities, both ice model tests and full-scale ship testing in real ice conditions. In 2005 he joined the newly founded Aker Arctic Technology Inc. where he was responsible of marketing and sales and full-scale field activities; ship testing and ice condition data collection. In 2009 - 2011 he was in charge of research and testing services at Aker Arctic Technology. He retired from the daily activities in August 2012 to continue as consultant. He has been in charge of some 90 missions of practical experience in ice conditions and vessel testing around the globe. He has also published 80 articles and papers in international journals and conferences.

Sampo Viherialehto  -  ABB
Sampo Viheriälehto
Master Mariner, Sales Manager, ABB Marine & Ports

Mr. Sampo Viheriälehto, a Master Mariner, holds a BSc in Nautical Sciences from Satakunta University of Applied Sciences. Viheriälehto currently works as a Sales Manager at ABB Propulsion Solutions in Helsinki, Finland. Viheriälehto has an extensive experience in icebreaking, ice management and offshore operations. In his previous position Viheriälehto as a Chartering Manager, was responsible for the chartering and sales operations of the Finnish Icebreaker fleet. His most recent operational position was an icebreaking and seismic expedition in North-East Greenland during 2015-2017. During his 15 years of sailing the high seas, Mr. Viheriälehto operated both conventional and Azimuth propulsion icebreakers around the world, in the Arctic and in the Baltics.


Samuli Hanninen - ABB
Samuli Hanninen
Key Account Director, ABB Marine & Ports

Mr. Hanninen works for ABB Inc. Marine and Ports business unit in Houston, TX, USA. His position is in ABB global sales team as responsible for icebreaking vessels. Mr. Hanninen is specialized in podded electric propulsion for icebreakers. He has a M.Sc. (Nav. Arch.) degree in Mechanical Engineering, Ship Building department from the Helsinki University of Technology, Finland. He has also work for Helsinki University Ship laboratory as research scientist and assistant lecturer in courses of ships ice loads and winter navigation. In the last 15 years he has published more than 30 conference papers and reports related to arctic marine technology.
