ReliaGrid™ eStorage OS Engineered Solution

Ensuring efficient delivery of power from battery energy storage systems toward distribution grids and microgrids

The penetration of renewables in the power distribution networks is increasing across all segments. It is essential to have an efficient handling of power delivery from battery energy storage (BESS), which can provide distribution grid services or within a microgrid in parallel with other BESS units, generators and utility grids.

The ABB eStorage OS is a comprehensive monitoring, visualization and control solution comprising multiple products including the AC800M/AC500 PLC, ABB zenon/ZEE600C Substation Automation Unit, as well as  communication equipment such as ethernet switches, energy meters, firewalls/routers, GPS servers and Edge gateways for ABB or third party cloud connectivity.
 
All equipment shall either be assembled in the secondary switchgear cabinet in the BESS or delivered in an engineered and tested standalone panel, as per project requirements.

Different eStorage OS solutions are envisaged based on application requirements:

  1. When eStorage OS, controlling a single BESS unit, is to be integrated into a higher level ABB/non-ABB control system.
  2. When eStorage OS is responsible for controlling a single or multiple BESS unit(s) and ensures full control of power delivery towards distribution grid.   
  3. When eStorage OS is responsible for delivering power on demand for an EV Charging infrastructure/station, by controlling BESS unit(s).

The data communication within eStorage OS components, between eStorage OS and products within BESS, like Power Conversion Systems (PCS), protection relays, and between eStorage OS with external systems is based on: 

  1. IEC 61850 MMS/GOOSE
  2. Modbus TCP
  3. OPC UA
  4. SNTP
  5. MQTT
  6. Hardwiring for critical signals like set point and control signals
