In this episode we return to the ABB Ring Motor factory in Bilbao, Spain: home to production of Gearless Mill Drives (GMDs), an essential technology for the mining industry.

At ABB, our engineers strive for continual improvement – anything that works, can always be made to work better. In this film, see how we’re bringing this to life by innovating the sealing system for GMDs, and helping mining industry customers radically reduce maintenance downtime.

The secret art of sealing

In a previous episode of This is Engineering we introduced ABB’s Gearless Mill Drives. These enormous machines power the mills that break down ore into smaller particles, a vital step in producing useful materials from mining. At up to 20m in diameter, the ring motors for these drives are some of the largest in the world.

Once commissioned at our customers’ mine locations around the world, the GMDs run near-continuously – with even an hour of downtime significantly impacting production output. Yet as with any machinery, maintenance is essential to ensure long-term, efficient performance.

One of the most crucial areas for maintenance is the seals that stop raw material escaping from the mill during operation. Given the machine is crushing rocks, the forces on these seals are intense, and they require regular replacement. As part of our feedback and engineering engagement with customers, this was identified as a particularly time-consuming task requiring complete removal of the sealing system.

The challenge to our engineers – how could this system be improved to transform the task of seal maintenance, while maintaining rock-solid performance?

Watch this episode to discover the engineering ingenuity and innovation that’s answered this challenge.

Meet the engineer

David Miguel, Principal Mechanical Engineer

I’ve worked for ABB for seven years, before which I spent eight years as a mechanical engineer in the aerospace field.

I find inspiration in engineering as I dislike repetitive tasks and need challenges. Engineering gives me the opportunity to innovate and solve problems in fascinating new ways, such as the new GMD modular sealing system.

Outside of work, I’m passionate about sports. When I’m not spending time with my 4-year-old, I enjoy cycling and running and have completed several triathlons in the past.

In both work and personal life, I enjoy the challenge of a tough target and don’t stop until I achieve it. For example, in my first triathlon (2km swimming, 40km cycling, and 10km running) I suffered an unrepairable puncture halfway through the cycle stage. Despite this, I pushed through to complete the cycle and the 10km run to make the finish. I was exhausted after riding on a flat tire, but giving up was not an option.
