ABB gas analyzers for captive industrial gas production

In some cases, gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, syngas and hydrogen are produced by industrial gases companies that are focused on these products. In other cases, the user of the industrial gas, such as a steel works, methanol plant, ammonia producer, oil refinery or chemicals plant will produce the industrial gases that they require for themselves. This is known as ‘captive production’ and takes place within the battery limits of the plant. In essence the same technologies are used to produce the industrial gases and the same gas analysis requirements exist. The only difference is that you are either making the gas for yourself, or buying it from an outsourced industrial gas provider.


Continuous gas analyzers for captive industrial gas production

– paramagnetic analyzer for percentage level oxygen analysis. Typical applications include ASU oxygen purity control, ASU waste nitrogen purity control and ASU argon column feed oxygen purity control. Commonly used for ASUs in methanol production and steel making, where oxygen is required, and in ASUs for nitrogen generation in ammonia production.

Uras26 – NDIR (non-dispersive infrared) analyzer configurable to a range of gases including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane and other light hydrocarbons. Typical applications include steam methane reformer process control. SMRs are required in the production of methanol and ammonia. They are also used to produce syngas for a variety of chemical synthesis applications.

Fidas24 – FID (flame ionisation detector) analyzer for total hydrocarbon analysis. Also available with a cutter for total non-methane hydrocarbons. Typical applications include hydrocarbon measurement in liquid oxygen on ASUs for process safety.  ASUs produce oxygen to intensify refinery catalyst regeneration and upgrade catalytic cracking capacity.

ZO23 – zirconium oxide trace and percentage level oxygen analyzer. Typical applications include confirmation of pure nitrogen purity with trace oxygen measurement and combustion oxygen stoichiometry control on SMRs, Nitrogen is used in large quantities for ammonia production. It is also used and for puring and intering on refineries and chemical plants for process safety and maintenance.

Caldos27 – TCD (thermal conductivity detector) analyzer for permanent gases including hydrogen. Typical applications include SMR process control. SMRs produce hydrogen for refineries to enable hydrogenation, hydrotreating and desulfurisation reactions. Hydrogen is also used in the direct reduction process for modern steel making.

HP30 – direct read hydrogen specific analyzer using solid state technology to eliminate interferance from matrix gases. Ideal for syngas production and SMR process control applications. Syngas is produced in gasification processes or from SMRs and it has many applications in chemical synthesis or it can be processed further to produce pure hydrogen.

Process GCs for multicomponent gas or liquid stream analysis

PGC1000 series
– rapid response process gas chromatograph for mixed gas stream analysis. Typical applications include calorific value (BTU) determination of natural gas feed to SMRs and syngas analysis for SMR process optimisation through steam to carbon ratio control. Also used on ASUs for measurement of hydrocarbons in liquid oxygen for process safety.

PGC5000 series – highly flexible and robust process gas chromatograph for gas and liquid stream analysis. Typical applications include full compositional analysis of pure carbon monoxide and hydrogen streams on SMRs. Can also be applied to a wide range of process and safety applications in the hydrocarbon processing and chemicals industries, e.g. LNG, syngas, ethylene, methanol and ammonia.
