Simple but powerful

ABB Ability™ Filed Information Manager (FIM) offers a simple but powerful tool for managing field instruments. Enhancing operational efficiency and staff productivity, FIM’s intuitive interface streamlines initial deployment, configuration and automatic loops checks. It also futureproofs the seamless management of industrial producers’ field device fleets with support for latest technologies and protocols such as Ethernet-APL and PROFINET.

Communication with a wide variety of field devices is enabled by open standards technology that allows FIM to host any EDD (Electronic Device Description) or FDI (Field Device Integration) package.

By simplifying the process of device management, FIM facilitates the seamless integration of thousands of devices from a single point, as well as the early detection of potential issues, minimizing downtime and maximizing operational efficiency. This integration also extends to higher-level IT systems. Comprehensive device management functionality includes support for PA Profile 4.02 devices, OPC UA and PA-DIM. This simplifies collection and transfer of device data to higher level IT systems to drive advanced analytics and insights that can be used to enhance decision-making, optimize process performance and maximize fleet asset health.

Field Information Manager with:

Opening new opportunities through Ethernet APL integration

FIM has been instrumental in BASF’s adoption of the Ethernet-APL physical layer standard, a key component of its digital transformation strategy. With the ability to carry both power and high-speed process, configuration and diagnostic data over long distances, Ethernet-APL opens new possibilities for BASF to realize the benefits of high-speed communications in maximizing automation across its sites.

Fully integrated intrinsic safety and shielded two-wire connection enable the technology to be deployed in hazardous environments that were previously unsuitable for Ethernet communications. Ethernet-APL offers an ideal fit for process plants, especially when it’s deployed in combination with widely adopted PROFINET.

When combined with PA-Profile 4.02, it enables BASF to explore ways to enhance its operations by enabling interoperability between any device installed in its plants.
