ABB’s renowned Relion® 615 series to support IEC 61850 Edition 2 for extended interoperability

ABB is taking yet another step to further consolidate its highly renowned Relion 615 protection and control series. The 615 series not only fully supports the IEC 61850 standard for communication and interoperability of substation automation devices, but now also Edition 2, offering substantial benefits in terms of extended interoperability. Regarding process bus, the ability to send sampled values of not only analog voltages but also currents and to use received sampled values of analog voltages for synchro-check to ensure safe interconnection of two networks is introduced. This applies to both conventional instrument transformer as well as sensor-based applications.

The implementation of the parallel redundancy protocol (PRP) and the high-availability seamless redundancy (HSR) protocol has now been extended to include the line differential relay RED615 with an optical Ethernet interface. Also the IEC 61850-9-2 LE process bus solution for less wiring and supervised communication together with IEEE 1588 V2 for high-accuracy time synchronization and maximum benefit of substation-level optical Ethernet communication is implemented.

The already impressive earth-fault protection portfolio of the 615 series is further extended in response to today's cable networks requiring higher sensitivity and selectivity. It now also includes the unique multifrequency admittance-based protection, intended for all types of earth faults, including transient and intermittent ones, combining both reliability and sensitivity in one protection function.

The 615 series relays are characterized by compactness and withdrawable plug-in unit design. As a member of the Relion product family, the 615 series relays share the same HMI look and feel as the other Relion series relays. ABB ensures full support for all protection and control relays throughout their entire lifecycle through the extensive life cycle services that include training, customer support, maintenance and modernization.
