From Concept to Operation: Integrating Large-Scale Energy Storage in Hybrid and Electric Vessels
As the maritime industry accelerates toward electrification, integrating large-scale battery systems presents unique engineering challenges from design through operation. This presentation explores the complete journey from initial concept to operational reality.
Main point that could be covered:
• Operational Profiling & Technology Selection – Understanding vessel duty cycles and the iterative process to match battery technology and capacity to the expected vessel operation profile
• Technical Integration Challenges – Addressing the complexities of installing multi-megawatt hour battery systems into the electrical architecture, including short circuit protection and common mode voltage
• Lifetime Operation & Maintenance – Managing battery performance through continuous monitoring, calibration strategies, and predictive maintenance to ensure reliability throughout the vessel's service life
