When a brief power failure impacts a home or school, the result may be inconvenience, but when a data center loses power—even for just seconds—the interruption could threaten medical procedures, financial transactions and other critical operations. Supplying reliable backup power in the first minutes of an outage or brownout is the role of the uninterruptible power supply, or UPS.  The UPS furnishes battery power to keep data centers running and conditions incoming power to remove spikes and sags.  Juha Lantta details how high-efficiency systems from ABB enable swapping out UPS devices without interrupting operations, while lowering energy costs.
