The KNX bus is essentially a pair of twisted-pair wires that serve as the connection point for the KNX devices. This cable is responsible for the transmission of data telegrams and also provides power to the electronics of the bus devices. The KNX system has the capability to be expanded over IP-Networks and through RF solutions.

The structure of KNX that is formed is highly adaptable in its design due to the potential connectivity of the devices. It allows for linear, tree, and star wiring configurations.

The KNX topology is organized in lines that can be interconnected via couplers, depending on the size of the network. The devices in the respective lines (both sensors and actuators) are powered by a 30V power supply. This allows the entire KNX bus system to be configured with more than 50,000 bus devices.
