Symphony Plus to automate third unit of Barapukuria thermal power plant

ABB has been awarded a contract by Harbin Electric International Co., Ltd. (HEI), one of China’s leading EPCs in the power generation and transmission sectors, to supply Symphony® Plus total plant automation solution for the third unit of Barapukuria coal-fired power plant, an expansion project which will add another 275 MW to the national grid.

Located at Dinajpur District, Rajshahi in north-western part of Bangladesh, the plant is owned and operated by Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), a public organization responsible for major generation and transmission of electricity for the country. The expansion project is part of the government's effort to boost electricity generation to meet the fast growing power demand of its over 168 million population, among one of the most densely populated countries in the world.

ABB will provide Symphony Plus total plant automation system to the expanded unit, controlling and monitoring the boiler, balance of plant, electrical systems as well as the switchyard. ABB is also supplying a power plant performance optimization tool which will provide further support for plant management through data collection and transformation into meaningful information for effective decision making. This tool will come with integrated web server function allowing remote web client access of process graphics with dynamic values, trends and statistical data and reports.

For the contract, ABB will be responsible for the complete system design, engineering, project management, testing and supervision of installation and commissioning as well as providing training for the automation system. The project is scheduled to be completed by second quarter of 2016.

The existing plant consists of 2 units of 125 MW capacity, commissioned in 2006 and since then has been running on ABB's Conductor NT consoles. With ABB's long standing 'evolution without obsolescence' policy, ABB has completed the upgradation of these units in the first quarter of 2015 to the Symphony Plus platform through seamless stepwise migration approach, ensuring minimum disruption of operation at the plant. Having the same Symphony Plus platform for the third unit with the same look and feel, makes plant operation easier and more convenient.

Symphony Plus is the latest generation of ABB's highly successful Symphony family of control systems. ABB has automated or is automating about 3000 megawatt (MW) of power generation facilities in Bangladesh, providing them with the simplest solution to the most challenging automation requirement for power and water facilities of all sizes. Globally, Symphony Plus is automating more than 30 gigawatt (GW) of power generation facilities.
