ABB delivering new digital solution for energy suppliers

  • Intelligent electricity distribution helps Danish utility manage impact of increasing electrification
  •  ABB solution uses InLine II fusegear with ITS 2.1 monitoring device to connect compact substations to ABB Ability™ and SCADA systems
  • Easy upgrade delivers reliable real-time data for smart reponse to changing grid demands

As energy evolves to become more decentralized and sustainable, the need for reliable real-time data from across the grid is increasing. Digitalization of electricity grids has so far been limited to larger grid stations, but ABB is now working with utilities to help manage the energy transformation process with intelligent, scalable solutions for substations.

With more households switching gas for heat pumps and filling stations for charging points, demand for electricity is growing and consumption patterns are changing. At the same time, fluctuating production from wind and solar energy sources is also making grids harder to control.

In places such as Denmark, where local utilities are responsible for generating and distributing the power for towns, these changes are driving digitalization of electricity grids at the neighborhood level. ABB is supporting the evolution process, helping utilities get the data they need to forecast demand and improve stability as they expand to meet demand.

ABB Denmark has been working with one utility, responsible for supplying water, heat, and electricity to a community of around 19,000 end-consumers. Digital upgrades to the low voltage fusegear found in neighborhood substations provide remote monitoring, data collection and fast error detection.

“We understand that digitalization is only the first step in the energy transformation process,” says Arne Nielsen, Product Market Specialist, Distributed Automation, ABB Denmark. “Getting the right level of digital solution is critical. Our local experts work hard to understand the customer’s immediate needs and long-term plans so they can respond quickly with sound advice and the most appropriate digital solution.”

ABB’s InLine II is widely used as fuse-based protection and as a disconnection device in low voltage installations. With a factory fitted ITS2.1 monitoring unit, the digitally enabled InLine II enables voltage, current and temperature measurements as well as position indication and electronic fuse monitoring. Connected to the cloud-based ABB AbilityTM platform or a SCADA system provides an efficient way to monitor and analyze operations using real-time data from the fusegear.

“Utilities work with ABB because of the strength of our track record in energy – and because solutions like this are scalable and the data availability is robust,” says Nielsen. “With digitalization and energy transformation, small steps can be the best way to begin.”

ABB’s solution is suitable for both new plants and upgrading older installations. Connecting the InLine II fusegear with factory mounted ITS2.1 monitoring device to the ABB AbilityTM platform enables customers to manage loading according to the grid’s specific demands and locate faults. Operators can use a tablet on the move to connect and receive status updates.
