AISTech 2024 to spotlight real progress in sustainable steel

Make the most of your time at this year's show

The Association for Iron & Steel’s (AIST) annual technology conference, AISTech, takes place on May 6-9, 2024, in the Greater Columbus Convention Center, Columbus, Ohio, USA. As in year’s past, attendees can participate in more than 300 individual presentations covering both tried and true practices and new approaches in the steelmaking process. Between sessions, they can browse new technologies and delve into various discussions with more than 500 different vendors in the Iron & Steel Exposition.

Top of mind for many in the industry today and at this show is decarbonization and ways to produce steel in a more sustainable way. There is still much to be done, but the Executive Director of the AIST, Ron Ashburn, said in a recent fossil-free steel report that while the biggest challenge to making green steel is the availability of clean energy, he’s optimistic about the future in the context of progress being made. He states:

There are numerous examples of public and private collaborations where steel producers are partnering with renewable energy suppliers on projects to support their production. There is significant innovation underway… which bodes well for the future of steel.

2024 AIST Charles W. Briggs Award

One example of real progress covered in this report is an innovative charging, melting and electromagnetic stirring solution provided by ABB and Tenova. The solution was detailed at AISTech last year in a technical session titled, "Tenova Large Electric Arc Furnace Equipped With ABB Electromagnetic Stirrer as a Model for the Efficient and Reliable Transition of the Steel Industry.” As it was very well-received, it’s being recognized this year with the 2024 AIST Charles W. Briggs Award for the best technical paper during the Electric Steelmaking Technology Committee meeting at the event.
