Shanghai E-Prix | ABB plays a pivotal role in energy transition, enabling electric transport

  • The technology of electrification, automation and digitalization is the key to the future of energy
  • ABB is a technology pioneer in the energy transition, empowering customers and partners from source to socket
  • China is an important market for our business - future growth potential as China transitions its energy sector

On 25 May, the all-electric motorsport series, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, will come to the Shanghai International Circuit for the first time. The series is the world's first all-electric single-seater championship, driving innovation in mobility and electrification. It has been highly anticipated since its launch in Beijing in 2014 and is now a top international sporting event.

On the eve of the Shanghai E-Prix, ABB Electrification held a customer summit with the theme "Innovation to transform the energy future". The event was attended by over 160 representatives of segment customers, panel builders and distributors. Senior ABB leadership Morten Wierod, President of ABB Electrification, Mike Mustapha, Division President of Smart Buildings, ABB Electrification, James Zhao, Senior Vice President of ABB China Ltd, were in attendance as well as Carol Liao, Chair of BCG Greater China and David Beckmann, Porsche reserve driver. The event focused on achieving business success in the energy transition through partnership. It also discussed how innovative technologies are expected to unlock the potential of electrification, smart buildings, and e-mobility to build a net-zero future.

"China, is a key driver of the global energy transition. Based on scalable solutions, ABB is establishing closer cooperation with local customers and partners across, driving solutions to problems that range from source-to-socket. We will innovate in the areas of clean energy, energy efficiency and electrification. Together, we will support China's ambitious goals of high-quality energy transformation, and electrify the world in a safe, smart and sustainable way", said by Mike Mustapha, Division President of Smart Buildings, ABB Electrification.

ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is driving innovation in mobility and electrification through sport, just as ABB has been driving innovation over its 140-year history impacting social and industrial transformation. During the event, attendees also witnessed the 100th anniversary celebrations of the resettable miniature circuit breakers. In 1924, ABB patented the resettable miniature circuit breaker, embarking on a passionate 100-year journey. Today, as core components, miniature circuit breakers are widely used in manufacturing plants, data centers, buildings, hospitals, railways and home energy storage systems, helping to protect and control terminal electrical circuits to create a better way of living, working and commuting. In addition, ABB also announced the Open Licensing of SmarTube, a core patent for a new generation of medium-voltage switchgear, Busbar Assembly for Air-Insulated High-Voltage Switchgear, to support the development of China's medium-voltage switchgear industry.

During the event, ABB E-mobility unveiled its first charging station in China. Located in Minhang district of Shanghai, this charging station incorporates ABB’s hardware and software ranging from power distribution system, electric vehicle (EV) charger, charging management system and energy management system, showcasing ABB's complete strength and technical advantages in e-mobility. At the same time, the ABB Electrification Roadshow 2024, launched on April 23, also toured this charging station to showcase end-to-end product portfolios including low and medium-voltage switchgear, service, installation products, as well as technologies of “source-grid-load-storage precision control" and “photovoltaic-energy storage-direct current-flexibility (PEDF)”. In the fan village outside the FE track, an interactive game is set up to simulate the racing experience of being an EV driver.

Electricity powers Formula E racing cars, while ABB drives the rapid development and transformation of cities through innovation. Since establishing its first joint venture in China in 1992, ABB has achieved high-quality growth in line with the country's economic development, and has supported numerous infrastructure projects, including the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, the data center of the Shanghai Stock Exchange, the cutting-edge facility of the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Science, and so on. Furthermore, the Shenzhen Shekou Plaza project is a recent demonstration of low-carbon renovation. It employs ABB’s intelligent energy management system, eStorage and chargers to regulate and optimize photovoltaic energy consumption, with the goal of reducing carbon emissions by 142 tons per year.
