Water, the most important natural resource, is crucial for building a strong irrigation system. Emmanuel Pappas, a municipality in northern Greek region of Serres, tendered to upgrade and improve its irrigation infrastructure to help local farmers and support their agricultural operations. In March 2024, ABB won the public tender to deliver a range of solutions to the municipality and help reduce costs and energy consumption at the irrigation system.
Known for its Mediterranean climate, Greece usually receives low rainfall. Establishing an efficient irrigation system is essential for the farmers and the wider agricultural community of the region.
ABB has over a decade of irrigation and water infrastructure experience, providing water management and treatment solutions to industries worldwide.
“We have worked with various municipalities in Greece enabling them to modernize their irrigation and water infrastructure by implementing our electrification, automation, and digital solutions,” said Michalis Kanellopoulos, Sales Manager at ABB Energy Industries, Greece.
Transforming water infrastructure for a better future
For the Emmanuel Pappas municipality, upgrading the irrigation system has been a priority. ABB’s solutions will help the water pumping stations reduce carbon emissions and ensure energy cost efficiency, higher productivity, and lower energy usage.
As part of the project, ABB will install a range of solutions such as electromagnetic flowmeters, programmable logic controllers and variable speed drives to enable an energy-efficient flow of water.
More importantly, ABB will deliver a DCS system, which enables real-time monitoring of plant and pump operations, enhances user-friendly control for operators, and contributes to cost savings.
Promising outcomes
Reducing the rate of energy consumption is a priority for companies worldwide as discussions on achieving net zero emissions continue. With ABB installed systems and solutions the municipality is aiming to lower energy consumption by 15 percent.
“We are pleased to cooperate with ABB, that has a track record of serving the water industry,” said Chr. Mitrakas, Head of Technical Department at Emmanuel Pappas municipality. “Modernizing our irrigation system using ABB solutions will upgrade the region’s agriculture and farming community. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with ABB in the future”.
ABB is responsible for the engineering and commissioning of the whole system. The project is due to be completed by December 2025.
