ABB's innovative technology is accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and shaping smarter cities.

In Thailand's Lampang province, a quiet revolution is underway. The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) at Mae Moh is leading the charge towards a cleaner future, and at the heart of this transformation lies ABB's innovative Terra 120 EV charger.

EGAT Mae Moh, committed to environmental responsibility, embarked on a mission to replace its diesel buses with a fleet of 28 electric minibuses (EGAT EV Buses). This bold move aligns with Thailand's national EV development plan and the Ministry of Energy's push for cleaner transportation. But to make this transition seamless, robust charging infrastructure was crucial.

The ABB Terra 120: Speed and Scalability

EGAT Mae Moh needed a fast and reliable charging solution to support their fleet of 28 electric minibuses (EGAT EV Buses). The ABB Terra, boasting a capacity of 120 kW and dual charging heads, were specifically chosen for their ability to deliver quick and efficient charging. Each ABB Terra charger seamlessly integrates with EGAT's OCPP electric vehicle charging management software, ensuring smooth operation and real-time data collection, and minimal downtime for the busy minibuses.

But speed wasn't the only factor. EGAT Mae Moh envisioned a future with a growing number of EVs, not just within their organization but for the public as well. The Terra 120's scalability addressed this concern. By the end of 2023, EGAT Mae Moh had successfully installed eight charging stations with a total of 16 charging heads across its facilities to accommodate a significant increase in electric vehicles.

Beyond Efficiency: A Commitment to Clean Air

The impact of the ABB Terra chargers extends far beyond operational efficiency. By replacing diesel buses with electric alternatives, EGAT Mae Moh is making a significant contribution to cleaner air. These electric buses boast a reduced carbon footprint, emitting 0.48 kilograms less CO2 per kilometer compared to their diesel counterparts. Additionally, they contribute to a healthier environment by generating 27 milligrams less harmful PM2.5 particulate matter per kilometer.

Building a Smart City of the Future

EGAT Mae Moh's commitment to sustainability goes beyond their own operations. By installing publicly accessible charging stations, they are paving the way for a more sustainable Lampang province. This initiative aligns with the vision of transforming the region into a smart city, prioritizing clean energy and environmentally friendly transportation.

As the adoption of electric vehicles continues to grow, ABB is championing e-mobility for a sustainable future, in which smart, reliable, and emission-free mobility will be accessible by everyone, everywhere.

As a world’s leader in electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions, ABB offers the widest portfolio of charging solutions from smart chargers for the home to high-power chargers for the highway stations of the future, solutions for the electrification of fleets and charging for electric buses and trucks. ABB has sold more than one million EV chargers across more than 85 markets, including over 50,000 DC fast chargers.
