ABB demonstrates digital power technologies at IEEE PES GTD 2019 in Bangkok

ABB participated in the world’s largest technical forum for the electricity power industry, the IEEE PES Generation Transmission and Distribution (GTD) Grand International Conference Exposition Asia 2019 in Bangkok, from march 21 – 23, 2019 in Thailand recently. After 40 years being successfully conducted in the United States, this is the first time that the event was held in another country – Thailand.

With the theme of "Big Shift in Power and Energy", IEEE PES-GTD attracted delegates from over 80 countries, including India, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and other countries from Europe, America and Asia. The 24 conference tracks attracted over 10,000 delegates with more than 300 experts from across the world discussing visions for the future of power.

At the opening ceremony, Claudio Facchin - ABB president of Power Grids, gave a keynote speech in the topic of “Enabling a Stronger Smarter and Greener Grid – A global Perspective”.

”The power sector transformation is at the heart of the energy revolution. There are mulitple shifts occuring simultaneously such as the shift towards renewable energy, the rise of distributed energy generation, prosumers, and new loads like electric vehicles. In this sitution, the grid needs to be flexible and multi-directional, at the same time remaining stable at all times. Utilities are preparing to respond to the new business reality of this transition, which calls for new business models. All this is enabled by the leaps that digital technology offers.“

Also on the opening panel were visionaries such as H.E Siri Jirapongphan, Minister of Energy, Thailand, who talked about the Thailand Energy System: The 4.0 shift, and Mr. Liu Zhenya, Former Chairman and President of State Grid Corporation of China - Power Transition of China and World Energy Revolution.

In another keynote session, Venu Nuguri, Senior Group Vice President, South Asia, Middle East & Africa, Power Grids Business, ABB presented on the ‘Grid of the future’. ABB experts presented various technologies throughout the event, covering digitalisation of power plants, electric vehicles, energy management systems and microgrids, and power quality.

The ABB team at the event had a high level of engagement with ministry and policy makers, and senior management from customers that were present.

At the ABB booth, a large number of visitors experienced the latest ABB technologies and solutions presented by our ABB experts. The center of attention at the ABB booth were ABB AbilityTM TXploreTM , ABB AbilityTM Performance Optimization for power generation, ABB AbilityTM Electrical Distribution Control System and the new generation of busses -E-Bus (TOSA). Other offerings highlighted at the booth were ABB MicroSCADA, ABB Elastimold Submersible switchgear for underground distribution system, Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), EV Charger solutions and YuMi (collaboration robot).
