Integrated one-stop monitoring for digital powertrains

ABB Ability™ Digital Powertrains monitoring services provide advanced analytics and maintenance planning to ensure the efficient operation of powertrains equipment, including drives, motors, bearings and pumps

The ABB Ability™ Digital Powertrains is a suite of digital solutions including devices, software and services that will be unveiled at Hanover Fair 2018. It enables users to digitally “see” operational variables through an integrated, one-stop portal. The data is complemented by ABB’s cross-industry experience, enabling better and more reliable decision making.

“We’ve been optimizing powertrains since we introduced Europe’s first steam turbine over 100 years ago,” said Sami Atiya, President of ABB's Robotics and Motion division. “Our new condition monitoring combines ABB expertise with real-time IoT sensing and analytics tools. This digital advantage increases process uptime and output for our customers, with less risks and costs.”

The first integrated service in the industry, is the ABB Ability™ Condition Monitoring for powertrains – for drives, motors, bearings and pumps. This visualizes key operational parameters of individual assets as a unified system and, with the help of ABB’s expertise, provides customers insight into maintenance to ensure optimal operations. As a result, the ABB Ability™ Condition Monitoring for powertrains offers insight that leads to operational improvement, resulting in less downtime, extended equipment lifetime, lower costs, and higher profitability.

The service offers full transparency on all parameters of powertrains usage, generating notifications when detecting indicators, such as temperature variations, unusual vibrations, and fault notifications. Customers can receive a thorough report on equipment status and further maintenance recommendations.

The ABB Condition Monitoring for powertrains services demonstrated at Hanover include:

ABB Ability™ Condition Monitoring for motors:

This solution includes a smart sensor device attached to a low voltage motor to remotely monitor the motor via an app or web portal. The service enables predictive analytics that can boost uptime while reducing energy consumption.

ABB Ability ™ Condition Monitoring for drives:

This service offers real-time information about connected drives events. Monitoring parameters include drives availability, environmental conditions, and fault events. The service offering helps anticipate possible operational issues and maintenance needs.

ABB Ability™ Smart Sensor for pumps:

This collaboration between ABB and Swiss pump manufacturer, Egger Pumps, includes a smart sensor for pumps, focusing on wastewater plants. This solution was jointly developed to monitor pump temperature, vibration and bearing condition – using data analytics – to prevent clogging and other issues in the application.

ABB Ability™ Smart Sensor for mounted bearings:

This solution connects to ABB’s Dodge® mounted bearings to give a health indication on this asset in the powertrains. Bearings are a critical component in the overall system and can be an initial indicator of problem in the powertrains.

ABB Ability™ Predictive Maintenance for drives:

This service combines data, machine learning and ABB’s expertise to regularly monitor and analyze data in the cloud to deliver actionable insight and improvements for installed high demand drives.

ABB Ability™ Condition Monitoring for powertrains provides a one-stop visualization of the operations of the unified system: drives, motors, mounted bearings, and pumps.
