The UniGear ZS1 medium-voltage switchgear was certified by CSA1,, a leading North American standards organization, in 2011. Now the CSA certification has been extended to include also UniGear ZS1 equipped with ABB's sensor technology and the latest Relion protection and control relays. CSA certification is essential for products to be sold in the North American market.

"This certification is a key development for ABB's customers," said Alessandro Palin, Managing Director of ABB's Medium Voltage business. "The flexible features of this innovative medium-voltage switchgear solution makes it suitable to address also the specific grid requirements in the North American market. Reaching this milestone is important, as we see an increasing demand in the market for digital switchgear solutions, as they are able to take on shorter project cycles, frequent changes and meet stringent cost-efficiency requirements."

As a part of the ABB Ability™ portfolio of connected solutions, digital switchgear combines protection, control, measurement and digital communication to enable a safe, flexible and smart electrical network that can deliver power reliably and efficiently. It is based on the optimized integration of current and voltage sensors into medium-voltage switchgear, combined with the latest Relion protection and control relays, and the capability of the IEC 61850 standard for communication.

ABB launched its first digital switchgear with UniGear Digital in 2014 and is building on its range with new generation digital switchgear technology that delivers operational efficiency and unprecedented flexibility. The delivery time is 30 percent shorter and engineering, installation and commissioning is easier. Using connectivity packages, it is quick and easy to connect the digital switchgear to a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system, and modifications can be made without complex additional wiring.
