SÜC Coburg orders Germany’s first SafeRing AirPlus – a ring main unit with groundbreaking eco-efficient insulation gas

The pioneering technology leader ABB has booked an order to deliver SafeRing AirPlus ring main units (RMU) with the innovative eco-efficient AirPlus™ insulation gas to SÛC Coburg.

This marks the first order for RMUs with AirPlus in Germany.

"The eco-efficient technology is testament to our commitment to develop groundbreaking eco-efficient technologies," said Bruno Melles, managing director of ABB's Medium Voltage business. "We have a great collaboration with SÜC Coburg and we are pleased to deliver these innovative technologies, reaffirming their confidence in our technologies and the reliability of our products."

The order was booked in January and ABB is delivering fifteen units of the SafeRing AirPlus. ABB's delivery also includes Fiona control cabinets, Relion® protection relays and remote terminal units RTU560.

The switchgear will be deployed as a secondary distribution ring main unit (RMU), which supports SÜC Coburg in their efforts to employ climate-friendly technology and at the same time, these highly automated units help to increase the reliability of the power supply in their power distribution grid.

SafeRing AirPlus was launched last year as an eco-efficient alternative to using the greenhouse gas SF6 in gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). It makes use of a new fluoroketone-based gas mixture developed by ABB in collaboration with 3M. The new gas has a global warming potential (GWP) of less than 1 (almost 100 percent lower than SF6). By choosing SafeRing AirPlus instead of a conventional RMU more than 3 kg of SF6 is avoided. This would have been equivalent to over 70 tons of CO2 emissions had the gas ever been released into the atmosphere.

ABB offers gas-insulated and air-insulated switchgear for the distribution of electrical energy, both for primary and secondary distribution. On the secondary level, switchgear is installed in compact substations or small distribution substations to ensure a safe uninterrupted power supply is delivered to households and small industries. Secondary switchgear is very compact meeting the strict space requirements often encountered in industrial and power plants applications, as well as, mining and marine industries, traction power supplies, and in public buildings such as, hospitals, railway stations and airports.

ABB provides utility, and industrial and commercial customers with safe, reliable and smart technologies for the distribution of electricity. The extensive global offering includes distribution automation products, switching, limiting, measuring and sensing devices, switchgear, modular substation packages and related services.
