Caribbean petroleum refinery invests in ABB Ability™ services

Refinery continues to invest in ABB remote-enabled services that improve asset, process and risk performance

A petroleum refinery located in the Caribbean Islands subscribed to four ABB Ability™ Advanced Digital Services, including Performance Optimization for control systems - 800xA, Performance Optimization for control loops, Performance Optimization for control loop tuning and Cyber Security Analytics.

The refinery’s team is particularly enthusiastic about the Performance Optimization for control loops service because it allows them to identify poorly tuned control loops, which were the root cause of persistent disturbances.

‘‘I had no idea how many of my process loops were in manual!” said a process engineer at the refinery. Process control loops that are in manual mode do not utilize the power of ABB’s automation, which in this case is the ABB AbilityTM System 800xA. The software-assisted, remote-enabled Performance Optimization for control loops service has helped her address process issues quickly, which in turn has improved control stability, equipment availability and asset utilization.

The refinery has relied on ABB Ability™ Advanced Digital Services since 2014, when ABB first introduced its remote-enabled services into the facility. Since this initial subscription, the refinery has spent $106,161 on ABB Advanced Digital Services.

Each year, the refinery has added more service manhours and ABB Advanced Digital Services subscriptions. In 2018, it added ABB’s System Update Service for cyber security patches. In 2019, it added three ABB Advanced Digital Services and an ABB Parts Fingerprint assessment. The ABB Parts Fingerprint evaluates parts management processes to find deficiencies and applies global best practices to resolve them. It identifies risks to production as well as cost-saving opportunities.

The refinery’s ABB services include:
