ABB steps-up innovation in smart buildings with open platforms and development partners

ABB Open Innovation Center in Shenzhen, China, celebrates first anniversary

The ABB Open Innovation Center in Shenzhen which focuses on developing AI, cloud services, network security and smart building solutions through global collaboration and innovation, is celebrating its first anniversary.

The building industry accounts for nearly 40% of global energy* and process-related carbon dioxide emissions. The Center enables ABB to develop in-house expertise around sustainable IoT solutions for smart buildings as well as work closely with third parties to extend the open cloud platform and explore the use of AI and big data in smart buildings. The Center is also focused on developing new solutions to enhance security, comfort and efficiency of buildings to reduce carbon emissions and support China’s efforts in moving towards being carbon neutral by 2060.

Shenzhen is a city of charm and innovation, and Nanshan District is the most dynamic and vibrant area. Huang Xiangyue, head of Nanshan District of Shenzhen, participated in the event and shared Shenzhen Nanshan's good business environment for innovation, livability, openness, law, and service. To date, the ABB Open Innovation Center has quickly established a digital product and R&D team, with experts in many fields including cyber-security, cloud computing and AI. The ABB Open Innovation Center in Shenzhen is coordinating external resources, focusing on ABB Ability™ cloud data acquisition, analysis and action triggering and developing partnerships with third parties to enhance communication between cloud platforms. The Center also works closely with universities, design institutions, partners, industry peers and investment and financing organizations to develop innovation in technology and build sustainable business models.

Recent projects include working with local partners that specialize in AI, machine learning, behavior identification and Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), enabling the application of technological advancements into ABB’s smart buildings solutions.

In its first year of operation, the center has successfully developed several intelligent digital solutions and services based on ABB Ability ™. This includes the KNX remote operation and maintenance solution which helps improve the speed of smart building operation and maintenance response to reduce costs; and a next-generation cloud-based smart intercom solution which eliminates cabling and supports cloud-based remote call via an APP and touchless door opening.
