Unlock equipment potential with ABB’s new Edge Industrial Gateway

Monitor all downstream low- and medium-voltage devices with one simplified gateway, via the cloud or on-premise system.

ABB has launched an Industrial Gateway using state-of-the-art Edge computing. Designed to collect all generated field device and parameter data across smart facilities, the ABB AbilityTM Edge Industrial Gateway feeds all data into one simplified and accessible platform to provide a full overview of system and building performance.

Using IoT technology, the Edge Industrial Gateway allows facilities to monitor all downstream low- and medium-voltage devices across a range of connections, including Wi-Fi and cellular, either in the cloud or on-premise.

The new ABB AbilityTM Edge Industrial Gateway has been designed to unlock the full potential of equipment and assets from the factory floor to operational teams, for complete and straightforward energy and asset management.

Andrea Temporiti, Head of Digital for ABB Electrification, comments on the importance of Edge computing: “Edge computing is poised to help facilities accelerate their digital transformation, improve connectivity in industrial environments and provide better data-driven insights, faster.”

Edge computing brings cloud capabilities to the factory floor, with all data in one place, making it easier and more efficient to monitor devices. Using any local internet protocol (IP) system, Edge connects assets so that they can share data with each other and within the safety of a protected factory ecosystem.

Compared to many data analysis systems that send IoT gathered raw data straight to the cloud, Edge computing processes data first within the factory devices, only sending organized packets of information to the cloud. This method dramatically improves data processing time, reduces transmission latency and allows for faster, more proactive asset and energy maintenance to prevent equipment damage and downtime.

When connected to cloud, the Edge Gateway plays an important role to keep data available and consistent. In the event that cloud connectivity is disrupted, data can be easily stored, and the connection will be recovered automatically when internet connectivity is restored.

With most of the processing done onsite, Edge computing also eliminates the need for a constant internet connection, or even multiple internet connections, reducing the threat of cyberattacks. ABB AbilityTM Edge Industrial Gateway acts as the one and only gateway to your data and is the most secure gateway system available on the market.
