ABB technologies ensure reliable power for edge computing data center in China

With continuous advances in mobile communication (5G), cloud computing and other emerging technologies like the Internet of Things, new demanding applications have emerged in the data center sector. Reliable power supply is mandatory to enable these applications.

As one of the major content delivery networks and data center operators in China, Wangsu Science and Technology Co., Ltd. is proactively tackling the challenges of 5G to increase computing capacity, deliver sustainable and quality edge computing infrastructure, while allowing users to have a fast, smart and a secure experience on the edge of the network.

According to experts from Gartner some 75 percent of global data will be generated and processed on the edge of a network1 by 2025. As demand for data storage and processing rapidly grows, so too does the demand for scalable and easily installed data centers at the edge. In June 2021, the Wangsu Jiading Edge Computing Data Center started its operation in Shanghai, designed to take its business presence in edge computing to the next level.

Edge computing means that an open platform integrating network, computing, storage and application core capabilities is deployed at the nearside of the object or data source, to provide real-time, dynamic and smart service computing for end-users.

To support the need for increased data capacity and the demands of edge computing, ABB delivered a fully integrated packaged solution to simplify system and power architecture which featured 35kV and 10kV medium-voltage and 400V low-voltage switchgear. This unique architecture enables safe and reliable operations by isolating issues quickly and simply, and improves power efficiency by 20 percent by avoiding overload caused by unbalanced load configuration.

According to James Zhao, lead business manager of Electrification Business Area, ABB China: “With technological advantages in digital power distribution, ABB is committed to providing customers with a wide range of flexible end-to-end data center solutions for large to small and medium-sized facilities, to cloud and edge computing. Our priority is to deliver continuous and reliable power distribution to important information and data assets, and promote the digital transformation of the industry.”

Working closely with the project contractor and designers, ABB’s packaged solution focused on simplifying the execution and accelerated data center build at Wangsu Jiading Data Center. Under a single commercial agreement, ABB’s standard architectures and solutions for edge computing provide data centers with greater flexibility, high levels of safety, and with the integration of intelligent technology, ensure that the data center can support its applications and always remain available.
