Qatar’s Four Seasons Hotel undergoes smart energy upgrade

ABB provides digital upgrade for The Four Seasons Hotel Doha to enable energy savings and predictive maintenance functionality.

The Four Seasons Hotel Doha is a seaside retreat in the heart of Qatar’s capital, offering a range of rooms and suites, plus restaurants, entertainment, a spa and many luxury amenities.

The Four Seasons Hotel Group has ambitious sustainability targets for its global network of hotels. The management of Qatar’s Doha resort were tasked with completing an energy upgrade capable of reducing carbon emissions and making better use of predictive maintenance for a range of electrical systems on site. The team turned to ABB for support with specification and installation.

The upgrade works included the replacement of 20 air circuit breakers with ABB’s Emax 2 smart circuit breakers, retrofitted five Ekip UP retrofit devices and connecting the substation to the ABB AbilityTM Energy & Asset Manager. Further substations will be connected to the Energy & Asset Manager to deliver energy savings and enable predictive maintenance functions to ensure maximum reliability at optimum cost.

With some of the site’s air circuit breakers approaching obsolescence, ABB’s local experts worked closely with the Four Seasons’ facilities team on an upgrade strategy for the site, providing technical support and information throughout the process.

“Tourism across Qatar is on the up, with the most recent statistics showing that the region welcomes around 2.14 million visitors per year.1 It is the responsibility of hotels like The Four Seasons to limit the consumption of natural resources and carefully control the generation of emissions and waste,” said Haytham Kamel, EL Local Business Manager for ABB L.L.C. “The Four Seasons Doha takes this responsibility very seriously and ABB’s local team of energy experts has proudly supported this world-renowned luxury venue with upgrades that will transform the reliability of its energy grid and will provide the hotel with long-term energy savings.”

Following the system upgrade, The Four Seasons Hotel Doha began to use the ABB AbilityTM Energy & Asset Manager, a state-of-the-art cloud solution that integrates a site’s asset and energy management needs into a single dashboard. The solution gives customers full visibility of their electrical system’s behavior and provides insights that help them minimize risk and cost, while maximizing performance and safety. By improving overall performance, the solution can save up to 20 percent on energy bills; 40 percent on maintenance costs; and 30 percent on operational costs.

“The benefits of the ABB AbilityTM Energy & Asset Manager proved to be a solid match with the hotel’s pro-active service philosophy and its comprehensive approach to the management of its sites,” said Gireesh Kumar Gopalakrishna Pillai, Chief Engineer for Four seasons Hotel Doha. “Our team ensured work took place without disruption for guests or downtime for essential operations.”
