- Advanced UPS solution for Rapelli increases power availability to 99.9999%
- Reducing costly downtime
- Achieving 96% efficiency and cutting energy costs
Founded 1929 in Stabio, Switzerland’s leading producer of quality cured meats and gastronomic specialities, Rapelli, has turned to ABB to upgrade its power supply for its IT systems.
With more than 400 employees across a 200,000m2 plant and working with high end perishable ingredients, it was essential for Rapelli to ensure installation over a weekend. This is where ABB stepped up and replaced two traditional standalone UPS systems, with its advanced modular DPA UPScale.
The Rapelli IT infrastructure now has 99.9999% power availability, and its UPS efficiency is as high as 96 percent, delivering both cost and energy savings. ABB’s DPA UPScale’ best-in-class energy efficiency designs also deliver significant operational cost savings, with the high-efficiency modular UPS’s needing less cooling. It’s modularity and scalability also significantly reduce the total cost of ownership.
In addition, its multimodule system is fault tolerant, there are no single points of failure and energy availability is maximized. Now, one or more modules can be lost without jeopardizing the critical load, keeping the systems live 24/7.
ABB’s Regional Sales Manager, Renzo Salmina, said: “Previously, Rapelli would have to stop IT’s services for servicing and repairs, but our modular solution removes the need to switch off power during replacements, so there is no costly downtime and it’s so much easier to pre-empt and manage faults.”
As with all large projects, details were important. Ensuring installation over a weekend avoided any disruption to the critical load and guaranteed no interruption to the power supply during the working week.
Renzo Salmina added: “The success of this project is the result of strong collaboration between ABB and Rapelli, from the initial concept through to implementation. We have enjoyed a long relationship with Rapelli over the years and there is a solid foundation built on trust and teamwork, which were key to us delivering the project on time and within budget.”
Importantly, Rapelli is now in a strong position to meet its ambitious production targets, as the new DPA modular UPS system is designed with agility and flexibility in mind, where it can grow with both planned and unplanned demand of the applied critical load.
