For the second year, ABB’s NEMA motors manufacturing plant in Flowery Branch, near Gainesville, Georgia, USA, will support its local high school’s efforts to design and build an electric vehicle to compete in the Georgia Electrathon endurance racing event. Georgia Electrathon is an organization of teachers, students and promoters of battery powered technology with a mission to inspire an interest in science, engineering and technology by involving participants in the design, construction, testing and development of competitive electric vehicles.
The goal of Flowery Branch High School’s racing program is to design, build, race and win an efficient, electric-powered car while encouraging collaboration, team spirit and healthy competition.
The program is organized by Mr. Harmon Tison, an engineering teacher in the STEAM program at Flowery Branch High School, with contributions from students with a wide variety of backgrounds, interests and talents. Working together in a collaborative environment, the high school’s engineering class designs the car, the metal fabrication class builds the car, and the design/ marketing class creates and installs the vinyl wrap for the car. ABB’s Flowery Branch plant sprovided a 1Hp, 24V, permanent magnet DC motor, manufactured in Westville, OK, and ABB manufacturing engineers lend insight and encouragement for the team. Once complete, the team enters the vehicle in a one-hour electric vehicle speed and endurance event sanctioned by Electrathon America. Flowery Branch High School scored a second-place finish in the 2022 event and looks to improve their design to achieve an even better result this upcoming school year.
