ABB Baltics Maritime Day highlighted the role of technology in the sustainable development of the maritime sector

On November 14, ABB organised a Maritime Day, bringing together clients and partners from the maritime sector, experts from TalTech’s Estonian Maritime Academy, and representatives from the public sector. The event brought together nearly 80 industry professionals, offering a unique opportunity to discuss the future of maritime developments and explore ABB’s innovative technologies.

The day began at ABB’s One Campus in Jüri, where participants visited the Drives factory, Motors and Generators factory, and Service Workshop. "Our factories and workshop impressed visitors with their cleanliness, expertise, and commitment to quality," said Jukka Patrikainen, Lead Business Manager for ABB Baltics. The factories produce products that play a crucial role in the maritime sector. “For instance, products manufactured at the Motors and Generators factory are used on Tallink’s vessels, while the service workshop supports maritime sector clients with maintenance and upgrades,” shared Jukka. Around 50 attendees participated in the morning program.

The second half of the day took place at the Radisson Collection Hotel, featuring a seminar focused on electrification in the maritime and port sectors, ship modernization, and decarbonization. Presentations were delivered by both ABB experts and guest speakers. Highlights included a presentation by a Tallink representative on the electrification projects of the My Star and Megastar ferries, as well as insights from the Port of Tallinn and ABB representatives on port electrification in the Baltic Sea region. The seminar welcomed approximately 65 participants.

Attendees praised the event for its well-rounded program and ABB’s level of expertise and innovative solutions. "The seminar clearly demonstrated how ABB technologies can improve efficiency while supporting sustainable development," said Jukka. "Customer inquiries mainly focused on how technology can enhance efficiency and sustainability, giving ABB the opportunity to showcase its vision for helping them achieve these goals," he added.

"Sustainability is a shared value for all of us, and ABB is committed to being in the same boat with our customers and partners," said Patrikainen. Feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive, with participants highlighting ABB’s expertise and the breadth of available solutions. "We are ready for close collaboration to meet the ambitious targets of the future. Perhaps we will organise a similar event as early as 2025," Jukka suggested.

According to Patrikainen, ABB Baltics Maritime Day underscored the strategic importance of the maritime sector to ABB’s business and clearly demonstrated how technological solutions can enhance efficiency and pave the way for a more sustainable future.
