After I finished university, I joined ABB as an engineering trainee and I’ve been working in mining ever since. The industry has been a key element in my own personal development and it’s what Great Minds, Great Mines means to me. It’s also about great people and great leadership when mining companies work to make sure they are helping the country, their own people and the communities to develop.
In Peru many communities look to mining companies to support them beyond what would be expected in many countries, such as providing resources such as water and roads and other infrastructure to help them develop. That means that in Peru interactions with the local communities are such a core part of the business model for mining companies – most of the big miners have very close relationships with the communities. As a key technology provider ABB does, too.
The expectations of the community are very high and of course mining companies cannot always provide everything they ask for –it is not their responsibility and role to do that. It can be challenging to run a business in that kind of environment but it is also where I see Great Minds in operation with Great Mines, because our customers have done a very good job in creating strong links with local communities.
Working with mines to develop tech – and people
Our customers are doing great work and are really an important part of the economic life of the cities where they operate. They play a very big role with their local communities and build strong ties with the local people.
ABB has been working with mining customers here in Peru for at least the past 35 years implementing new technologies to help optimize productivity, which of course also helps them to reduce the carbon footprint of operations. As a technology partner, we also work with miners to help them train their local personnel on new equipment, particularly around automation. Boosting professional development in this way is so important, particularly in our country. We are working with local customers to implement new automation technologies around transportation and processing that will help them to further reduce their emissions.
There is a lot I am proud of over my 20 years so far with ABB. Last year we worked on a study with a company here in Peru which looked at five of their operations around the world. Our study compared using a variety of technologies and approaches to help the customer learn which of the five operations had the biggest opportunities to decarbonize, and how. That study is now linked to their international sustainability strategy and already adding value to their own operations but also to their shareholders. Mining companies all have to meet decarbonization targets for 2030 and 2050 and I am proud that ABB is helping our customers to achieve that goal.
A few of our Great Minds
We have so many extraordinary people on our team. One is Pablo Calisaya, our engineering manager in Lima who has been with ABB for almost 23 years. He’s well-known to our customers and is a personality for them – whenever they have an issue on a key asset that ABB has delivered, they will call him directly. They are confident he will sort it out!
Another I will mention is our head of electrical engineering Fernando Delgado who has been nearly 15 years with the company. He’s very collaborative and has recently been involved with some challenging projects where he had to work very closely with customers to meet their schedule.
The third one is Reynaldo Mayorca, head of automation engineering for ABB in Peru. He is actually a metallurgical engineer and he is one of our key people locally. Most of our automation projects have been successfully executed because of him.
In the past years we have successfully increased the participation of female talents in our team. We truly believe that a diverse and inclusive team is key to help to develop our Great Minds.
One of our female talents is project manager Denisse Gamarra who is involved in delivering our automation projects. On every single project our customers have been so happy to work with her. She has created a close relationship with her counterparts. That helps her to overcome any challenges and facilitates that the different functional teams involved in a project delivery work seamlessly together.
Finally, I will mention Giovanna Mamani who began making her career inside ABB in 2010, progressing to service sales support manager. Giovanna currently is a key pillar in our strategy to increment our service volume and market penetration of our installed base.
Great Minds means a diversity of thinking of backgrounds and experience. A broad range of genders, ages and professions powers our local team of Great Minds and I believe it is the key to our success in Peru.
