Designed to support the increasing digitalization of substations, ABB’s all-in-one protection relay for advanced power generation and distribution applications supports a variety of digital switchgear solutions. Introducing a narrow hardware variant makes Relion® REX640 suitable for an even wider variety of switchgear, applications, as well as protection schemes, which opens up new possibilities.
The new hardware variant has been designed to fit smaller switchgear, making sure REX640 remains an option also when applications are advanced but installation space is limited. The detachable connectors further facilitate installation in tight spaces. The narrow hardware variant also makes it possible to rack mount two REX640 relays, with or without HMI (human-machine interface), next to each other.
The only difference between the two hardware variants, in addition to the size of the case, is the number of module slots. Product Line Manager Markus Kortesluoma said: “The new hardware variant has 5 module slots instead of 7, as in the standard-sized relay. The software options remain the same, with no impact of the case size on the available application packages, communication or language options, for instance. All HMI options remain the same too.”
Compared to REX640 narrow, REX640 standard is better suited for more advanced protection schemes, requiring a larger number of current and voltage transformers, and for applications requiring a larger number of binary inputs and outputs or resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) and milliampere channels.
Convenient upgrade through retrofit
REX640 narrow is an excellent alternative for replacing, for instance, ABB’s REF 542, REF 542plus, RE_ 541/3/5 and 630 series relays due to similar dimensions and functionality. Modernizing the installed base through retrofit gives access to the latest protection and control technology, making sure the power protection system meets not only today’s requirements but is adaptable to future requirements too. REX640’s fully modular hardware and software further adds to making the protection solution future-proof for the evolving grid.
