ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won the largest tender for hybrid switchgear - PASS in India.
The state utility GETCO will use PASS for extension and upgrading of a number of existing 66 kV and 220 kV substations as well as for green field projects to strengthen the Indian power grid in the western state of Gujarat.
ABB scope includes the supply, erection, testing and commissioning of hybrid switchgear modules PASS, designed and manufactured in ABB's Vadodara facility. GETCO selected hybrid switchgear technology because it involves reduced land requirement, less installation time, and does away with conventional disconnectors to improve availability of the substation.
ABB's plug and switch system (PASS) is a high-voltage hybrid switchgear with the best combined features of air- and gas-insulated technologies. Using the PASS modules not only saves up to 60% space on site, but also provides a fast-track solution, as they are delivered as completely pre-fabricated, pre-wired and high voltage tested units. PASS has a proven track record and a global installed base.
PASS integrates all the necessary substation switchgear bay functions, including a circuit breaker, one or more combined disconnector/earthing switches, bushings for connection to single or double busbar systems, plus current and voltage transformers in one compact module. This eliminates the need for separate pieces of equipment for each function. It also reduces the need for civil works such as foundation laying, steel work and cable trenching as only one foundation base is required, while in case of conventional solution, multiple foundations and steel structures are needed for each element.
