ABB manufactures 10,000th LV circuit breaker Retrofit Kit

ABB Smart Power facility in Dalmine celebrates milestone in retrofit kit production – which has saved more than 30,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions in the last five years

ABB Smart Power Service in Dalmine, Italy, has announced the manufacture of its 10,000th low voltage (LV) circuit breaker Retrofit kit since production began in 2014. A milestone that signifies that the evolution from analogue to digital products and services is intensifying, and that customers are actively looking for more sustainable ways to improve performance and connectivity.

As a true enabler of circularity, ABB is proud to offer retrofit kits that enable engineers to upgrade and update existing electrical systems, to extend the useful service life of critical assets, maintain uptime, save money and reduce carbon emissions quickly and easily. Upgrading and updating LV distribution systems with ABB retrofit solutions has resulted in more than 30,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions saved in the last five years, equivalent emissions of about 6000 passengers vehicles driven for 1 year1, and the reduction of 800 tons of copper and 1200 tons of steel per year throughout the same period.

The ABB LV circuit breaker retrofit kit is a sustainable, tailor-made solution for customers. Fully certified and tested according to international standards, they have been specifically designed to allow the regeneration of LV switchboards with the most advanced, performance-driven circuit-breaker in the ABB, GE and non-ABB range.

Retrofitting provides a cost-effective solution to improving performance, by changing only the critical outdated components, rather than the entire system. In doing so, engineers can maintain the original structure of the switchgear, the operating logics of the system, and the configuration of the equipment, whilst improving electrical reliability. Upgrades of this nature also make it easier to connect a wider range of switchboards to cloud-based management systems, like the ABB AbilityTM Energy and Asset Manager, for predictive maintenance and direct remote communication.

Global Product Group Service Manager for ABB Smart Power, Massimo Paganoni, comments on the success of the Dalmine factory:

“Reaching the manufacture of 10,000 retrofit kits is a real milestone for the Dalmine factory. This result is thanks to the synergistic efforts of service sales, product management, R&D teams and to all our passionate people in the production, quality, and purchasing departments.

“Retrofit kits are an innovative peace-of-mind range of solutions designed to fulfill customers’ requirements all over the world, across many fields of application including the industrial sector, utilities, oil & gas and the critical power sectors. We are proud to bring to market solutions that enable our customers to work towards a more sustainable future.”

The ABB factory in Dalmine is a worldwide center of excellence in producing retrofit kits for upgrading and updating existing electrical systems, as well as scheduled, preventive, predictive and remote maintenance, professional training and the supply of spare parts. It also houses a bespoke offering for the production of made-to-measure circuit-breakers.

As customers continue to seek out more circular solutions for extending asset service life, improving system performance and advancing the connectivity of their electrical systems, sites like ABB Dalmine will become increasingly more important in delivering to market safe, smart and sustainable retrofit kits.
