Together with ABB’s drive solution, ABB’s Value Provider, Electrical Trade Distributors, who provided installation supervision, commissioning service and support, is enabling Wellington Water to deliver up to 10% in energy efficiency savings per month. Furthermore, it will deliver benefits to the community through cost savings and resilience.
Using ABB’s all-compatible ACQ580 drives for water and wastewater, Wellington Water can simplify its pumping processes and motor control while ensuring energy efficiency. The drives have the intelligent pump control feature built inside of them, which help achieve energy savings and ensure stable and uninterrupted flow of water by optimizing the speed and number of running pumps.
“The change of the controls systems to utilize the variable speed drives characteristics has helped to remove other electronic components required to operate the controls of the pumps. This has resulted in better resilience within the control systems, which has made it easy for the operators to manage,” said Paul Winstanley, Wellington Waters Utilities Planning Engineer. “The ACQ580 is user friendly. It has the ability to have intelligent pump control. It’s got the functions built in so they’re easy to operate and has the smarts to control the pump in a better format than just a normal drive."
For the Wellington Water project, ABB has supplied the complete series of the ACQ580 drives, which are specifically designed for the water and wastewater industry. For reliable measurement and analytics, ABB previously implemented the AquaMaster electromagnetic flowmeter, to measure and store data about the water flow in real time to track exactly how much water is passing through the pipes.
“Our drives provide the energy efficiency capabilities to help Wellington Water optimize their process and control systems, resulting in increased network resilience,” said Aran Ferranti Silverio, ABB Motion’s New Zealand business manager. “The local team with support from our Value Provider, Electrical Trade Distributors, provided a high-level of commissioning, service and support, which resulted in a positive outcome. We are proud to play a part in a project that will help the Wellington community”.
