Delrin®, formerly owned by DuPont and known for its Poly Acetal Homopolymer resin called Delrin® POM-H, selected ABB to upgrade one of its plant’s control rooms and the Distributed Control Systems (DCS) to optimize productivity and achieve operational excellence. Delrin® POM-H is a high-wear resistance and strength, low friction, and high stiffness material. It is an ideal component and alternative to metal in making gears, conveyor belts, door systems, and healthcare delivery devices.
The plant, located in Dordrecht, in the Netherlands, needed an upgrade of its control room consoles with two new customized ABB EOW solutions, which play a crucial role in ensuring 24/7 operations. “When it comes to EOW or designing the control room consoles, our expertise, knowledge and flexibility enabled us to win the customer’s confidence,” said Cuno van den Hondel, Account Manager at ABB. “We collaborated with Delrin’s plant operators to understand their requirements and customized the console accordingly.”
Tailormade control consoles for higher operator alertness
ABB is a pioneer in providing EOW solutions with its unique control room consoles specially designed and optimized for round-the-clock operations. It reduces operator fatigue, creates alertness, and improves user health and well-being.
“ABB’s sophisticated workplace ergonomics plus a close pre-integrated large-screen overview for clear and concise plant-wide visualization have helped us in running our operations efficiently by minimizing response time,” said Cees-Jan Hage, Leveraged Project Team Leader at Delrin®.
ABB won the project and upgraded the control room with two new EOW’s and new customized cable trays. In addition, ABB also upgraded the plant’s control system to the latest version of the ABB Ability™ System 800xA® DCS.
Achieving desired benefits
The control room operator’s actions have a direct impact on the up-time, production output, quality, and safety of the plant. ABB’s solutions enhanced Delrin’s plant performance by sending out alerts while detecting errors, helping in swift troubleshooting.
The sets of monitors are mounted in a way that enables both a focused and a general view of operations. Desk and monitor height, and the secondary monitors’ angle are motorized and adjustable, supported by Radio-frequency identification system (RFID), to ensure an ergonomic and customized operator environment. ABB’s EOW-3 provides plant-wide visualization, process overviews on close-by large interactive panels, a small footprint but generous work area, increased work environment appeal and job satisfaction to the operators.
